Description
Built in 1898 and listed as a Monument Historique, the Capucin funicular embodies all the charm of the Belle Époque. It climbs to an altitude of 1245 meters at the Salon du Capucin for easy access to hiking trails, the Sylvatorium, the Mont-Dore Aventures park and the Capucin via-ferrata. This little train, a real cable railway, climbs up the side of the valley at a speed of 1 metre per second. It's the oldest electric funicular in France.
Take time to admire the Art Deco style of the departure station, enlarged in 1930, and the large cogwheels, reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, in the engine room of the upper station. Following in the footsteps of the artists who came to take the waters during the Belle Époque, the descent from the Salon du Capucin via the Chemin des Artistes or the Chemin des Médecins is an easy way to continue your journey back in time.
Good deals, on sale from May to September, on site or at the tourist office:
