The Ardèche Gorges

On foot, by car, by boat, by canoe, or bivouac, there are a thousand ways to discover the Gorges of the Ardèche in all their natural splendour, each one with guaranteed wonder.

By canoe

A canoe trip through the Ardèche Gorges is an unforgettable experience! More than a sporting activity, canoeing in the Gorges of the Ardèche is an encounter with nature. Getting back to the basics, a timeless break in the heart of magnificent nature.

You can canoe through the Gorges of the Ardèche in a day (about 7 hours of paddling). But to make the most of the trip and take your time, we recommend spreading out the adventure over 2 days, and spending the night in the heart of the Ardèche Gorges Nature Reserve.

For a family, children need to be at least 7 years old and know how to swim. It's also best to be in good physical condition to endure the 24 or 32 km down the river between Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche.

Wild camping is prohibited in the nature reserve. The only option to spend the night is in a bivouac (camping) area on the edge of the river.  You can therefore schedule this outing for the day or over two days with transfers for your clients in the morning and evening and find nature accommodation near the gorges such as the Prehistoric Lodge & Silex hotels.

Ardèche Gorges

On foot

There’s wonder waiting around every riverbend, every rock, and each step along the 24 km path that follows the Gorges of the Ardèche.

The itinerary through the Ardèche Gorges consists of 2 sections of 12 km each.

The upstream portion: from the Tiourre Bridge, after the Pont d'Arc in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, to the Gournier bivouac camping area. And the downstream portion: from the Gournier bivouac camping area to Sauze beach in Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche.

This is a rather challenging itinerary aimed at experienced hikers. The trail is quite steep, with handrails, fords (river crossings), and a portion in a natural chimney, which you'll have to climb up out of!

The river crossings are in the upstream part of the hike.

This is a point-to-point trail, not a loop: so, you will need to provide a vehicle for your customers on arrival or organize their return by shuttle.

Hiking guides of the gorges of the Ardèche are available in tourist offices, or a better option is to hire a professional guide.
