Hiking in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes!

Here, unplugging and filling up on fresh air are the virtues of hiking. With more than 33,000 km of marked paths and legendary itineraries like the Tour of Mont Blanc and the Way of St. James, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the ultimate hiking destination! The region offers a wide range of hiking for everyone to enjoy at their own pace! Here are some examples of routes:

On the trail of the Huguenots (Drôme & Isère)

This European cultural hiking trail follows the historical route taken by the Huguenots, forced into exile after the Edict of Nantes was revoked (1685 – 1690). The French portion of this itinerary totals 374 km. It begins at the Protestant Museum of the Dauphiné in Poët-Laval in Drôme and continues through several valleys before arriving in Isère. Between Grenoble and Chambéry, the route winds along a part of the Chartreuse Mountains.

The Tour du Vercors

France’s largest Regional Nature Park, the Vercors Mountains are a mostly limestone range covering more than 1,350 km² between Isère and Drôme. The Tour du Vercors is a long-distance, panoramic hiking itinerary for discovering the wide-open spaces, high plateaus, and peaks of the Vercors. Hikers can complete the loop in one trip or in sections.

The volcanoes of Auvergne

Volcanoes have always shaped the landscapes of Auvergne, from Europe’s largest volcano in Cantal, to the iconic Chaîne des Puys – Limagne fault, a UNESCO world heritage site. In the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, straddling the departments of Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme, discover a rural, mid-mountain environment (from an elevation of 400 to 1,886 m) with exceptional landscapes. What could be better than exploring the Auvergne volcanoes on a family hike with a donkey!
