EXHIBITION “LES RUBANS DE L’INTIME” – Museum of Art and Industry – Saint-Etienne

Until November 14, 2021, the Musée d’art et d’industrie de Saint-Etienne presents the exhibition “Les Rubans de l’intime”
This exhibition traces the evolution of the uses and perception of ribbon in underwear from the 19th century to the present day, through exceptional pieces.

From fine lingerie pieces to holding or medical restraints, the ribbon is everywhere and for all functions. Through an intimate scenography and tour on fashion, the course will present pieces of famous houses thanks to many loans: wasps of Chantal Thomass – sponsor of the exhibition -, corsety dress of Jean-Paul Gaultier, bras Cadolle, Lise Charmel, Fifi Chachnill, Dior lingerie, Maurizio Galante dress and Franck Sorbier undress.

Thus, the set of exhibits will reveal all the specificities of ribbons productions for lingerie, The exhibition will tell how the companies of the Saint-Etienne territory have participated in the evolution of the products and the market of the lingerie-corsetterie.

“Les Rubans de l’intime” will unveil the relationship that the underwear ribbon maintains with the notion of intimacy and monstration of the body, object of unveiling and seduction. It will thus show the evolution of the cultural boundary between what is admitted or not admitted, decent or indecent. In filigree, it will trace a cultural history of underwear and intimacy from the main evolutions of the lingerie.
